Gram Vikas

Gram Vikas, (est 1979) is a non-partisan voluntary organisation working in partnership with tribal, dalit and other poor and marginalised communities to bring about sustainable improvement in their quality of life. Active mostly in Orissa, India and more recently in 3 more Indian states and in The Gambia and Tanzania.
We promote processes, which are sustainable, socially inclusive, and gender equitable, to enable critical masses of poor and marginalised rural people & communities to achieve a dignified quality of life, reduce/ eliminate the avoidable drudgery of poverty of the scheduled castes & tribes and women of isolated rural communities.

Through MANTRA everyone is engaged, everyone contributes and everyone benefits. Committees representing the entire community collect Rs 1000 from every household (the rich supplementing the poor) to build the same toilet and bathing room for every family. Gram Vikas then taps into government grants to pay for the water supply
•In 943 villages, 100% of the households, that is 55,419 families have sanitation and bathing facilities and 24 hour potable water supply.
•Over 20,000 hectares of land treated under watershed programmes since 2005
•4 residential schools with 1400 students in tribal districts of Orissa
•over 54,000 biogas plants installed
•Micro-hydro: 4 sites commissioned (approx total 60 Kwhs) since 2004 and 2 more in progress in Kalahandi district, Orissa, India
