VisionSpring
VisionSpring is a social enterprise that establishes and grows local capacity to deliver affordabale eyeglasses in low-income commmunities across the developing world. We accomplish this by training local individuals to serve their communities and sourcing products that meet the needs of the working poor.
What we do
VisionSpring trains local individuals to educate and serve low-income communities that currently lack access to this life changing product, while setting up operations to provide refractive eye care so that people requiring either reading or prescription glasses have reliable access to such products.
Why we do it
Over 500 million people cannot see, because they do not have access to simple pair of eyeglasses. Without eyeglasses, workers cannot see their goods and children cannot see the blackboard. The result is a drop in productivity and income that can push families further into poverty and prevent future generations from realizing their potential.
How we do it
VisionSpring employs local individuals to educate low-income communities in the developing world about vision loss, conduct eye screenings, and sell affordable eyeglasses. For more advanced eye care needs, we provide referrals to either a VisionSpring optometrist/refractionist or reputed eye clinics in the region.
Achievements
To date, VisionSpring has distributed over 834,000 eyeglasses to communities in need, provided income & livelihoods for over 9,000 low-income individuals selling our glasses, and generated over $315 million in economic impact for our customers. We have expanded from a small rural village in India to 8 countries across the developing world and in the last year, we estabalished prescription glass services in both India and El Salvador.
